You just cannot imagine, nor can words describe, what New Year's is like in Tirana!! There are fireworks going off all day long, but at about 11:45 PM, things begin to intensify, and people are shooting off amazing fireworks from their windows, from the ground outside their apartments, and from the rooftops. Around midnight, the fury and intensity of the fireworks is deafening, and it appears as though the entire city has erupted in war and conflagration....this lasts for about 20 minutes, then gradually dies down. We climbed up a ladder thru the ceiling to get access to the roof of our bulding (Liz viewed the whole thing from the safety of the apartments, which was still amazing). It was an amazing panoramic view!

Wow! Joshua would be scared out of his mind. We bought little poppers for the night, and after pulling the string on one, he went crazy and screamed and cried for about 15 minutes, insisting that we take them back to the store. Hope you guys have a happy new year! love you!
Well, we still have 25 minutes to New Year celebrations. Barry is in Richland where I'm sure the celebrations will be somewhat subdued. Virginia will maybe muster a few fireworks, and I imagine that D.C. will have some, also. Your's looked incredible.
Christian's mission (Quetzeltenango, Guatemala) also requires missionaries to stay in their apartments during the New Year festivities. They evidently love fireworks shot from rooftops, too.
Love, and Happy New Year!

I've just spent an hour getting caught up on your blogs -- I love them! (I've been sick since Thanksgiving -- I really DO love your blogs!) Your NY blog reminded me about the fantastic fireworks we saw on our mission. Now we're back to going to bed at 9:00 New Year's Eve (although this year we made it to 11:00 playing speed Scrabble).
Hope you're doing well, and Happy New Year! (Shall I send you off my leftover chocolate -- about 15 lbs. of it. You could make chocolate-dipped cookies when the chips run out. I wasn't up to Christmas baking this year.)
